They seemed resilient, waterproof, shady and each cowboy knew exactly his hat, it seemed to be like a type of a personal trademark.
These hats seemed so long-lived that one even put them on the dead heroes mounds or tied them to the cross. The only thing, which these hats didn't endure, was the famous bullet, that left a hole in forehead's height.
Well, today I am fifty and finally live in South America. There aren't any more wild Native American, who wants to steal the white man's scalp, but there are still rodeos and western clubs. And in the south, unending beef herds with the Gauchos - the Spanish name for cowboys - and they still move over the endless prairie. Nowadays some cowboys use a motorcycle, but the hat still is remaining the same.
And exactly where the Gauchos from Brazil live, I found a manufacture, where still today western- hats with their extend brim are produced as 150 years before. From wool felt and fur in handicraft in fact in a way, that they are absolutely waterproof. Real stiff western hats, that one can decorate with a braid from horsehair or with snakeskin as hat-string.
Far from the slouched hats that I got in the carnival as child or the imitated hats of polyester, rice fiber, straw or cotton-felt.

As I bought my first hat, the friendly older salesman took one simple measurement bond, wound it about my forehead. The picked off centimeters showed the hat-size.
With me 58 and... fited like a glove!
There was a stiff hatbox with the hat in order to protect him from filth, dust and insect dirt.
But on Sundays, I wear my hat. A great shadow donor and ... see it this way: A hat like thisone you buy only once in lifetime.
I made my hat bond by myself, that was a question of honour for me! A bond from fine snakeskin.
There is the western for children with hat-sizes 50 until 55. For grown-ups from hat-size 53 until 64.
Hats of the same form and function are produced as well, dense-woven out of a nature fiber.. later I found out, that it is a palm fiber.

the workers of the Panama-canal used to wear and the legendary hat from INDIANA JONES was also produced right here.
My first one was out of wool felt, stiff and in king-blue, my hat bond from light snakeskin looks quite well on it, but I could imagine also a woven bond from horsetail. Hat-bonds are not done once for life-time, every now and then you should change it, if you feel bored with the old one.
